The Dallol volcanic crater sits within Ethiopia's Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth at 48 meters below sea level . The site comprises a hydrothermal field rather than a traditional volcano, featuring hot brine springs, miniature geysers, and multi-colored salt deposits ranging from white and yellow to green, red, and ochre . These colors result from iron oxide, sulfur, and other mineral impurities interacting with hyper-acidic waters (pH below 1) . The area contains the Dallol mountain rising 60 meters above the salt plain, with a 100-meter-wide summit crater formed during a phreatic eruption in 1926
