Ethnological Museum

The Ethnological Museum at Addis Ababa University is Ethiopia's first university museum, established in the 1950s and officially part of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies since 1963 . Melka Kunture is a cluster of prehistoric sites in Ethiopia's upper Awash Valley, approximately 50 kilometers south of Addis Ababa at an elevation exceeding 2,000 meters. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024, the area preserves a nearly two-million-year cultural sequence encompassing the Oldowan, Acheulean, Middle Stone Age, and Late Stone Age. Hominin fossils of Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, and archaic Homo sapiens have been discovered alongside stone tools and animal bones. The site features an on-site museum and open-air exhibits displaying excavated Acheulean living floors preserved in situ.
